CHAPTER NINETEEN

☨

Frank pulled the tip of his cap low over his eyes and hunched his shoulders. It was late and curfew was getting nearer. He had checked the area around the apartment and, once convinced it wasn’t being watched, stepped out of the shadows and headed across the road towards the building.

He knocked purposefully on the door and waited. A moment later, a nervous voice called from inside.

‘Hello.’

‘It’s me,’ he said quickly, ‘Francois.’

He waited as Monique slowly unlocked the door. He’d noticed two locking bars at the top and bottom the last time he’d been there and waited impatiently as she released them. Eventually the door opened.

Without saying a word, he marched past her into the hallway, taking off his hat and placing it on the coat stand.

With reddened eyes she closed the door behind him and, ignoring him, walked to the kitchen. He’d disturbed her preparing a meal. A small pan of potatoes bubbled on a stove, steam misting the window that looked out on to a communal yard. She turned it off and sighed loudly.

‘What do you want?’ she said, walking past him to the living room and seating herself in a high-backed armchair in front of an unlit open fireplace. To the side was a small table on which a half knitted sweater was bundled, a ball of wool and two knitting needles resting on top.

‘I want a report,’ he replied eventually. ‘I need to know what’s happened to you since I was last here.’

She rubbed her eyes before responding.

‘I hate you,’ she snapped. ‘I want you to know that. I want us to be perfectly clear on that. I don’t want you here. I wanted no part in any of this and now look at me. My life is destroyed. I have you on one side and that evil bastard, Keller on the other.’ She shivered. ‘My God, he makes my skin crawl and it’s all your fault. Yours and that prick, Jean-Luc’s. I hope they’ve caught him and I hope he’s dead.’

‘Why is it Descartes’ fault?’

‘She loves him, that's why… Catherine… And he doesn't deserve her love. She should have left him months ago. She only stayed with the Resistance because of him. One of them they captured the other night talked. That's why the Gestapo came for us.’ She burst into tears. ‘Now my life is in ruins.’

‘Stop feeling sorry for yourself,’ Frank snapped. ‘You’re free. Your sister’s the one in an SS prison, not you…’

‘Keller has been round,’ she interrupted, clearly not listening to him.

‘When?’

‘Twice in the last few days.’ She wiped her tears with the back of her hand. ‘He wanted to know if anyone had been to see me. Anyone who may be involved…’

‘What did you tell him?’

She glared at him. ‘Don’t worry, I told him I hadn’t seen anyone… You have to be careful. They’re watching this place, I’m convinced of it.’

‘There was nobody watching tonight,’ replied Frank.

‘How can you be sure?’

‘I’ve been doing this thing long enough to be sure,’ he replied dismissively.
