CHAPTER NINETEEN
â¨
Frank pulled the tip of his cap low over his eyes and hunched his shoulders. It was late and curfew was getting nearer. He had checked the area around the apartment and, once convinced it wasnât being watched, stepped out of the shadows and headed across the road towards the building.
He knocked purposefully on the door and waited. A moment later, a nervous voice called from inside.
âHello.â
âItâs me,â he said quickly, âFrancois.â
He waited as Monique slowly unlocked the door. Heâd noticed two locking bars at the top and bottom the last time heâd been there and waited impatiently as she released them. Eventually the door opened.
Without saying a word, he marched past her into the hallway, taking off his hat and placing it on the coat stand.
With reddened eyes she closed the door behind him and, ignoring him, walked to the kitchen. Heâd disturbed her preparing a meal. A small pan of potatoes bubbled on a stove, steam misting the window that looked out on to a communal yard. She turned it off and sighed loudly.
âWhat do you want?â she said, walking past him to the living room and seating herself in a high-backed armchair in front of an unlit open fireplace. To the side was a small table on which a half knitted sweater was bundled, a ball of wool and two knitting needles resting on top.
âI want a report,â he replied eventually. âI need to know whatâs happened to you since I was last here.â
She rubbed her eyes before responding.
âI hate you,â she snapped. âI want you to know that. I want us to be perfectly clear on that. I donât want you here. I wanted no part in any of this and now look at me. My life is destroyed. I have you on one side and that evil bastard, Keller on the other.â She shivered. âMy God, he makes my skin crawl and itâs all your fault. Yours and that prick, Jean-Lucâs. I hope theyâve caught him and I hope heâs dead.â
âWhy is it Descartesâ fault?â
âShe loves him, that's why⦠Catherine⦠And he doesn't deserve her love. She should have left him months ago. She only stayed with the Resistance because of him. One of them they captured the other night talked. That's why the Gestapo came for us.â She burst into tears. âNow my life is in ruins.â
âStop feeling sorry for yourself,â Frank snapped. âYouâre free. Your sisterâs the one in an SS prison, not youâ¦â
âKeller has been round,â she interrupted, clearly not listening to him.
âWhen?â
âTwice in the last few days.â She wiped her tears with the back of her hand. âHe wanted to know if anyone had been to see me. Anyone who may be involvedâ¦â
âWhat did you tell him?â
She glared at him. âDonât worry, I told him I hadnât seen anyone⦠You have to be careful. Theyâre watching this place, Iâm convinced of it.â
âThere was nobody watching tonight,â replied Frank.
âHow can you be sure?â
âIâve been doing this thing long enough to be sure,â he replied dismissively.
